staying up late isn’t really a way to get extra time.

you can get extra time by actually sleeping less but then you’ll be tired more and worse at thinking and worse at physical stuff.

if you just got in bed would you just fall asleep easily? if so i’d recommend doing that more and trying to adjust your schedule management to it.

for chores, do you need to do them every day? how many minutes of chores are we talking about?

Some work stuff:

We recently changed our grading(?) policy for our performance. One notable change is in what is being graded. You now get graded on whether certains are “turned on” on our item availability tool. If an item is “turned off” meaning that its unavailable you will now get marked for it. I assume this was to encourage managers and their supervisors to be better about ordering product. Two issues:

First, Starbucks has a lot of seasonal product. Seasonal product is available through the season after it comes out, but only from the remaining inventory at any given location. After that even if you order it, it won’t get sent (save a distribution center having more to spare). Issue is turning that off in the inventory still marks against you.

Second, as with a lot of things some managers have focused on manipulating the system. I recently worked out a store where we ran out of grilled cheese. I’ve worked there plenty of times. This is a store that never had an issue turning stuff out. Debatably they were too comfortable doing it when they shouldn’t have been (turning stuff off they had to slow down mobile orders, which is a big no-no). Now they outright refuse to turn anything off. I got a mild coaching when I went to turn it off. Now this kind of stuff will probably used to lie to shareholders and all that (assuming this is happening at scale which it probably is), but what about for customers? Simple we’re just lying to them. For example, turning off a beverage component (fruit that goes in a drink for example) would turn off that whole drink on mobile orders. Now the expectation is that a customer will take a drink thats mostly right. They won’t care about the missing fruit (nevermind they may have ordered it for the fruit). What if they are completely out of a product? Refund them or offer them something else.

What else?

I ~wonder: where do people get their confidence in managing when they’re just cheating the system. Do they think that cheating is the only way? Their just playing into a game? Maybe? Or do they geniunely think that manipulating like this is good management? I don’t know. I know people want to be seen as good without actually being good, but I don’t know. The above story came from working with a manager I’ve worked with a bunch. In his own store he breaks a bunch of rules, but when talking to peers he talks in a way that implies he follows the rules to a T. I wonder if he’s truly lying to them, to be seen as great or does he think this is a lie that they’re all in on. That they do the same (which plenty of them do).

Mmm. More-or-less. If its too too early I’ve noticed that my body kind of treats it like a nap and I wake up a few hours later, but generally if I do go to bed around my intended bed time of around 11pm (getting up at 7am) I can fall asleep easily.

I’ve thought about doing it and have tried before, but then something will come up that keeps me up and then the sleep schedule spirals. Sometimes its more justifiable like an assignment keeping me up other times its because I just want to game/watch TV.

The main ones are cleaning out my cats litter boxes and cleaning the kitchen. The litter boxes are like max 5 minutes, if that. Cleaning the kitchen varies. The issue I have with cleaning the kitchen especially is that if I miss cleaning it by a day it starts building up to a point where I don’t want to do it.

Having some relaxation in the evening and before bed is important. You should build it into your schedule. If you’re running out of time, your schedule (whether it’s written out in detail or just some loose guidelines in your head) is flawed: either leaving out some important stuff or underestimating how long things take.

Finally got all the crystal hearts in Celeste (or at least the ones I need to progress idk if there’s more). It was fun beating all the B-Sides and trying to figure out how to get the blue hearts.

How do I mark something as a spoiler that you have to click to reveal?

Some extra details of stuff I think I have remaining in Celeste (idk if you cared about being spoiled in this game).

Summary

I beat all the B-sides and unlocked the C-sides for all the levels (which I think is it, there are no D sides). So I have those to do.

I unlocked the ability to get golden strawberries which requires beating a whole level without dying. Im not looking forward to this especially cause this means beating some of the craziest levels without dying. I’ll probably take my time doing this one.

I unlocked the rest of the final chapter (so I’m beating that currently).

I think that’s it for main game content.

I’ve been playing Celeste almost exclusively on my steam deck (though i started off on pc and i heard that keyboard controls are better for speedrunning so i might play it on my pc at some point) and i noticed a recording feature. They record up to your last(?) hour of gameplay. I tried it out and it was cool to see my gameplay. One thing I noticed is how different it feels from watching to playing. One of the levels i did i found really really hard but when i went to watch it i found it very easy to follow. I almost felt confused to why I even made those mistakes.

i don’t want spoilers. please hide them thanks

I’ve been playing Celeste almost exclusively on my steam deck (though i started off on pc and i heard that keyboard controls are better for speedrunning so i might play it on my pc at some point)

I play

WASD=move, J=grab, K=jump, L=dash

I tried grab on space but didn’t like it. I do this to match Hollow Knight and Cuphead where I use J=attack, K=jump, L=dash.

IIRC speedrunners need multiple jump buttons (or mb multiple dash, not positive). I do have a second jump on ; and could put it on Space and other keys, but I don’t know if that’s optimal or I’d need to change keys to speedrun. I think speedrunners don’t use grab as much as casual play and probably shouldn’t waste right index finger on it.

I did something similar but with controller layouts. I played Hollow Knight with a controller and RT was dash, so I did the same with Celeste (I think the original bind was like A/B or smth).

I think I remember hearing that. I think another reason is related to dashes. from what i understand it’s just easier to control your dash direction with keyboard controls as opposed to the joystick on controller (which I think makes sense).

A couple days ago I started Celeste again on a new file. I’m now passed where I got before. I just beat Core.

How far are you planning to go with your current playthrough? Do you have a goal in mind or just keep going until you lose interest?

Past few days I’ve completed some end game stuff and have been working on doing some of the first levels deathless. Doing the first map was easy and I think I can do the second one soon.

One thing I’m going to look into soon is save state tools for practice. I wonder if any work on steam deck or if its just PC.

I also might try and play some modded Celeste just to have a bit more variety on easier maps. Right now all the stuff I’m doing feels pretty hard. It’d be nice to have some fun new easy options to practice with.

No specific goal.

What you say for yourself makes sense.

I recently started watching the anime Orb: On The Movements of the Earth . I really really like it so far and would recommend people here to watch it. Unrelatedly, I forgot about my goal of writing mini-essays, so now I’ll combine the two. I’ll write about Orb later because I’m still watching it and I don’t want to spoil it for others. So instead I’m going to write about one of the fields its covers: astronomy. I’m writing this with a minimal knowledge of astronomy. I’m going to reference wikipedia a bit to help. I guess this could have been called: What do I think is Astronomy?

What is Astronomy?

Astronomy is the field of science that studies the cosmos/spaces. It seeks to describe phenomenon such as the planets, stars, moons, meteorites, black holes, and comets. Astronomy and astrophysics are closely related. Astronomy aims to describe and understand the cosmos generally. Astrophysics aims to better explain the cosmos through physics. Astronomy seems to generally focus on what is in the cosmos and how entities are moving about. Astronomers focus on describing the movement of entities in space and discovering new entities in space. Astronomy, compared to other natural sciences, has been studied for a long time and is still considered valid.

Some daily writing I did:

  • ““How can an individual propagate your philosophy on a scale large enough to effect the immense changes which must be made in every walk of American life in order to create the kind of ideal country which you picture?”” - [[Philosophy]]
    • Miss Rands answer to this: do what you can. Don’t focus on doing/achieving some kind of amazing global change. Focus on what you can do. You can, first of all, embody the philosophy yourself. Before preaching to others about rationality and selfishness, are you, at least, working on being rational and rationally self-interested? Or did you just read Atlas Shrugged, think it was good, and changed nothing about your life? You should embody the philosophy before pushing it. Secondly, you just do what you can. Don’t think about how the end goal is seemingly having a million people consume it. Instead, just focus on convincing your friends and family. If you have a community that listens to you (if you’re a streamer, YouTuber, or other kind of influencer) share it with them. If they are convinced, if they like it, then it will spread slowly but surely.
    • In general, don’t most things spread slowly like that. Through word of mouth with steady growth? People share things they like and more people come to like it. There are exceptions like when an algorithm blows someone up (on YouTube for example) or things like industry plant kind of stuff.
  • “In a plot story, men and events are pulled forward by a purpose.” - [[The Art of Fiction]]
    • I think this more so means that the events and characters communicated are all pulled forward by a purpose. In a plot story when you communicate something it has a purpose to the entire story. You wouldn’t communicate something such as the character ate or used the bathroom unless it served a purpose to the story (the purpose can be as simple as the character is eating to have energy to workout tomorrow). Events are technically happening in the background of a story world. What gets communicated are those more purposeful moments.
  • “An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made in a very narrow field.” - [[Give Me a Break]]
    • I like this quote from Stossel. I like the emphasis(?) on experts making mistakes.
  • “Abusive men tend to be happy only when everything in the relationship is proceeding on their terms. This is a major reason for the severe mood swings that they so often exhibit from day to day.” - [[Why Does He Do That?]]
    • Hmm. I think its more broad then just the relationship. I’m reminded of the statistic (I haven’t verified it) where domestic abuse goes up in the U.K. around football season (or was it during any particular football match), since teams are losing and winning. This is a case where men are being abusive but everything in the relationship is seemingly going on their terms. Its an outside issue here, their team losing a game, that is “making” them abusive.
  • “Entitlement is the abuser’s belief that he has a special status and that it provides him with exclusive rights and privileges that do not apply to his partner. The attitudes that drive abuse can largely be summarized by this one word.” - [[Why Does He Do That?]]
    • This quote made me think someone I know closely is abusive. There are other issues I won’t get into, but what this quote specifically reminded me of was an issue this person and their partner had with vaping. I’ll just say their a friend. My friend hates that his girlfriend vapes and has tried a bunch of stuff to get her to quit. One time recently she reached for a vape that she had hidden and my friend got very angry. He said stuff like, “See how angry what you do makes me?”. Shifting the blame for his really bad anger to her wanting to vape. A bunch of stuff later and I happen to go to dinner with this friend and what comes out of his pocket? A vape. Maybe this friend turned his mind around, but I doubt it. I had suspicions they vaped before but they kind of made it their personality for the longest time that they were the type to not do drugs. They became open with drinking, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they picked up vaping. Just wild to me that she afaik is not “allowed” to vape, but he presumably is. Wild.
  • “The question “Why do I want to write this article?” involves two sub-questions: “What subject do I want to write about?” and “What do I want to say about the subject—i.e., what is my theme?” - [[The Art of Nonfiction]]
    • I think this advice can apply to writing essays (mini-ones at that). The book was Miss Rands thoughts on writing nonfiction and articles was just how she talked about it.
    • When writing a mini essay I should think about the subject, lets say mathematics, and what I want to write about the subject, lets say what is division.
    • So themes could be: What is division? What are my thoughts on the division concept in math? What does it mean to be divisible? What is division in the grander scheme of math? I guess my subject here become division, but the broader subject is still math.

Had trouble thinking of a mini-essay topic. Glanced across my desk and saw the title of a self-help book called How to be Happy decided to write my thoughts on happiness.

I think one reason I struggled with keeping up this mini-essay thing is struggling to think of a ,or (more precisely) be comfortable with a, topic. Even though it could be anything I struggle to be satisfied in my head. Could you suggest some random topic as I write these mini-essays? I know you mentioned before to write how a microwave works so I’ll do that one soon, but if you could help with just suggesting topics as to take that stress off of me.

What is Happiness?

Happiness is seen as a state of joy. It’s different from mere pleasure. One can be unhappy, sad, or angry and still find something pleasurable. Pleasure from an orgasm, or from some tasty food, or from a drug, just gives you a quick feeling of enjoyment. Those short-lived states are not happiness. When I feel happy (as, again, opposed to just moments of what I think are just pleasurable) I have a feeling of contentment, of things going well, and just a general feeling of enjoyment even if nothing particularly pleasurable is happening in the current moment. |

Yeah. I like to think of a person coming first place in a marathon. He would be feeling great amounts of pain, but also presumably a great amount of happiness.

~yeah or any other kind of not typically super pleasurable goal. I think the average person who probably goes for their PhD is probably very happy they achieved their goal even if the process itself wasn’t that enjoyable.

I recently got told I over explain stuff. I think that’s correct. I wonder why that is? Something that Miss Rand wrote/said came to mind (I think said, because the book, Art of Non-Fiction, is a transcription of spoken lectures with some editing):

Some people commit the error of trying to present all they know by writing an unanswerable article.

The second reason why trying to write an unanswerable article is a mistake is that the author is assuming his readers do not possess free will. He is assuming he must present, by some undefined means, a case that no one could resist. But clearly such an assumption is false. People can evade the most obvious logical connections.

I think I try to give responses that cover a lot when speaking/writing. I want to cover all possible responses that I can think of and want to make sure I’m not misunderstood.

Do I like McDonalds? I think some simple answers not over-explainy answers could be “Yes”, “Yea”, “Yea, I like their food.” Depending I could definitely answer like this “Yea, I like McDonalds. I’ve been eating it for the past twenty years. My go to order is a Double Cheeseburger with Fries and a Dr. Pepper and if I’m feeling very hungry I’ll get a chicken nugget with that. My dad used to take me so I think thats why I like it so much.”

Why? Cause I: assume where the conversation is going and want to go ahead and answer it (maybe the follow up is what do you get there or why do I like it so much) and I feel uncomfortable not giving a fleshed out answer. I feel like theres something wrong(?) with short responses.

Ok. I just read the wikipedia page for this and am just trying to sum up what I understood there. I avoided the AI summary because at that point I’d be probably end up paraphrasing the AI and I don’t think that’s in line with my goals.

How does a microwave oven work?

A microwave oven uses electromagnetic waves at a certain wavelength to heat up your food. The specific wavelength is called microwave (thats why its called a microwave oven), which sits between radio waves and infrared waves. A cavity magnetron in the microwave produces the microwaves. Microwaves rely on a physical process called dielectric heating, Dielectric heating uses the electric structure of water, fats, and other substances in the food to heat it up.

It takes skill to figure out what’s important and what to cut. Experience helps. It also depends on your context and audience.

Another reason people over-explain is they aren’t confident they’ll receive enough followup questions.

I’ve heard microwaves primarily heat the water in your food but I haven’t looked into it.
