i should have phrased that more narrowly. i meant philosophical in the more DD-ish sense: physics, epistemology, creativity, knowledge, etc.
dune definitely has political/social themes. i just didn’t get the sense from the movies that it was doing the kind of philosophy i’m currently most interested in. could be different in the books though.
Heinlein wouldn’t be philosophical in that sense either. He’s sci-fi adventure, not hard sci-fi. He doesn’t go into fundamental philosophy like Rand either, but he has pretty decent and positive philosophical premises, which makes his adventures more enjoyable. That’s not to say that his themes are shallow, which they are not. I would say he goes most philosophically deep on political philosophy themes.
