Leaderboard definition

A leaderboard is a ranked list that orders participants - people, teams, players or departments - from best to worst based on a single score or metric, and refreshes as those scores change.

What’s a ranked list? Ranked is stuff like rank 1 or rank 2 or rank 3? That’s like being in first place or second place. I think when you rank something it’s in a certain order. The order is based off a metric no? Like, the highest amount of kills on a video game or the fastest time?

That’s interesting I kind of got an idea about what a leaderboard is after writing the last paragraph. That was before reading the entire quote. It’s like if you use knowledge of other things then you can do the goal of figuring out what a leaderboard is.

I see that a leaderboard has a list of participants. I know they’re ranked but also they could be people, teams or other things. I’m thinking in a dichotomous way like you can either be by yourself or in a group.

So far I see how leaderboard climbing is a kind of competition. If you have something that’s measurable in an activity, you can make a competition out of it. Like, who can solve the rubik’s cube the fastest? Another one is who can solve the most rubik’s cubes in an allotted time? There’s a lot of things to make competitions out of.

I wanted to make a minor observation about this comment. I can’t post in the thread because it is a dedicated debate thread. I don’t expect this post to merit a long discussion or anything.

I just wanted to stress that the Leaderboard-style is a really important type of competition. If you consider how even something like Olympic sports are conducted, lots of them are effectively leaderboard style. You often do not have teams or individuals going head-to-head. You have people trying to achieve some specific athletic goal (time, distance, etc.) and then they get put on what is basically a leaderboard to figure out who wins gold, silver, and bronze.

So I think it is important to consider this type of competition in your debate.

Idk what’s a dedicated debate thread. Is it cuz we’re having a debate, we should keep it on topic? Or does that mean we should mostly debate on there? Or mostly the participants should discuss there?

I think I see how olympic sports are conducted. Like, people do their best and it shows up as a stat and the people that get the best stats get medals.

Olympic sports are usually about people being the best at something. I think that’s important cuz a lot of people watch it and it matters a lot.

Im thinking that Leaderboard-style competition applies to many things. Maybe more than people going head to head.

No, it just means I literally cannot comment on that thread. Like, I do not have the option to reply or post there, period. Presumably due to settings on the forum.

By “really important” I just mean… it comes up a lot. It is a major, common type of competition. Probably just as common or more common than direct head-to-head competition such as a sports game.

The term “leaderboard” is associated with a specific niche (especially video games I think) and not really used when discussing the Olympics, so I figured it might not occur to you to think of it that way. But as far as I can tell it fits.
