Paragraph Trees and Pinker Video

10 posts were split to a new topic: Is Society Merit Based?

https://www.szasz.com/manifesto.html:

Presumption of competence. Because being accused of mental illness is similar to being accused of crime, we ought to presume that psychiatric “defendants” are mentally competent, just as we presume that criminal defendants are legally innocent. Individuals charged with criminal, civil, or interpersonal offenses ought never to be treated as incompetent solely on the basis of the opinion of mental health experts. Incompetence ought to be a judicial determination and the “accused” ought to have access to legal representation and a right to trial by jury.

bullet point summary:

  • accused of mental illness similar to accused of crime
  • presume competence
  • presume criminal defendants are innocent
  • don’t base incompetency on opinions of experts
  • incompetence judicial determination
  • “accused” right to legal representation and trial by jury

I made these trees for the paragraph 8 days ago, then I got busy and put off comparing with the video until today.

I haven’t put two connector nodes together, but I thought it made sense for this tree. “Just as” was a good connector, but then why should you do X like Y? because of reason Z. That made sense to me.

When I was watching Max trying to figure it out I added the first fragment and made an alternative for first “because” connector node that follows the usual connection rules.

I think my first tree gives more information about how I interpreted the tree. The second follows typical form. Overall I like the first one best, but the difference doesn’t really matter, they would accomplish most of the same goals.

I had the same groupings as Elliot, except he had 6 and 7 split up and as children of 5. That also makes sense, that was how I had it in my simplified tree. But I viewed the paragraph as having two conclusions. The main being “presume competence” and the secondary conclusion which follows from the main being “right to legal defense.” I also thought 6 and 7 were so close they were better to think of as one thing at this level, but splitting them up is fine as well.

It took 43 minutes to make the trees. Although I actually made the trees quicker but then spent some time contemplating without making much changes.

And now I spent 36 minutes watching the video and writing this post.

Project Notes

That’s the end of project. I’ll make a conclusion soon.

Project Conclusion

Total time 12:56
paragraph trees and pinker video 12:56
\_ meta 1:54
\\_ planning 0:41
\\_ conclusion 0:27
\_ paragraph tree videos 2:51
\_ pinker video 6:52
\_ szasz paragraph test 1:19

I did that. So the project was a success. I also felt the project went well. I enjoyed the project, especially doing the Pinker video.

I learned to make paragraph trees. Some specific things:

  • conclusion as the root.
    • initially I thought conclusions would be leaves, because thought of paragraphs as having an argument then additional arguments which lead down the tree to conclusions, which would be leaves
    • there are other ways to structure paragraph trees, but I think having the conclusion as the root is most useful.
  • having connection nodes that explain relationships
  • making simplified sentences and treeing them before filling in details

I saw the best examples of the usefulness of grammar and paragraph trees in philosophy through the Pinker video. It was good example of rigorous philosophical analysis. I haven’t done philosophical analysis like this before, so I think I learned stuff about it, but I can’t pick out specific things.

I think I can already make useful paragraph trees. I’ll still need to do lots of practice to improve my judgment quality, and then I can work on automatizing such that it helps while reading.

I want to practice more paragraph trees, but I still wouldn’t know what goals to set for a paragraph tree project that isn’t just do X amount of paragraph trees (without objective quality check, best I would have is comparing to others). So I’ll just make a topic to practice for as long as I see fit.

Feels great being back and posting again.
