Should I call the topic and concept “overreach” or “overreaching”? Which is better? Why?

“Overreach” in my mind is cluttered with contexts like “The imperial overreach of the Roman Empire reached its final end in the chaos and collapse of the 5th century.” OTOH, “overreaching” is something I associate almost exclusively with FI/CF stuff.
