Imma write a project about making a potato farm in Minecraft:
Project Summary:
I want to make a project about setting up a potato farm to start stockpiling on food. I want to see what I learn about projects and binary goals.
Goal:
Begin stockpiling food with a potato farm.
To begin stockpiling potatoes I gotta make a farm. So first sub-goal is to make a potato farm. After, that I have to make the potato farm big enough to get a lot of potatoes to save them. I have to cook the potatoes too. I need more coal for that.
Success criteria (& optional failure criteria):
Success criteria for making initial potato farm:
- Having rows of planted potatoes with water sources that don’t turn into ice.
- How many rows and columns? I think im going to leave that up to how much space I can make rn. For sure the rows are going to be 4 dirt blocks away cuz anymore than that the water source isn’t going to seep through all the blocks to water them.
- Success will look like me having all my potatoes in my inventory planted.
- Success will also look like maybe having a fence so no mobs ruin a patch of growing potato
Failure Criteria:
- Plant only half of the potatoes(~15 total) in my inventory
- Make the grid for farming too small.
- How much is that? <30 total blocks for growing potatoes
- Die and lose my potatoes
- Make a wheat farm instead
- Why is this failure? Too much time and might have to find another space for new farm
- Takes more than 30 mins to set up
Success criteria for sub-goal 2:
- I’m going to have my farm space at least double.
- I’m going to have all my potatoes growing in the space
- No water from any source in the farm will be frozen
- I’ll have at least 60 spaces for potatoes to grow. (Now I see that every block will yield one potato to cook. Since I want about 5 stacks and it takes potatoes to fully grow 10-30 mins, if I have 64 spaces then it’ll take at most 2hrs and 30 mins to grow.)
- Have an extra stack of coal
Success criteria for sub-goal 3:
- I’ll have all 64+ spaces with potatoes planted.
- I’ll have surplus potatoes baking in the furnace
Failure criteria:
- Not having any surplus potatoes baking in the surface
- Spending more than 3 hours on this part of the project
- Logging off or being occupied with something else
- Dying and losing all my surplus raw potatoes and spending more than 3 hours at that point
- Having more than a quarter of my farm space not planted with potatoes
Big picture goal, why you want to do this, or CF relevance:
Practice projects in video games.
Plan:
So plan for the first sub-goal of making a farm:
I gotta make space for a farm so I might have to cut down some trees. I need to make a certain grid of dirt and water for planting potatoes and providing a water source for them. This is going to be an initial potato farm, so I can plant the potatoes I got rn and the potatoes imma get after growing them. I’m gonna expand the farm, partway through the project.
Also, since Im in the snow biome, I have to cover the top of the water source so it doesn’t turn to ice.
I was thinking about needing dirt and other resources for the farm. So I was thinking about using some project considerations from the following article:
The following bullet point is under the section Project Planning Considerations:
I think I’m going to get at least half a stack of dirt. Since dirt is so fast to get with a shovel, I don’t mind getting even more.
I’m going to need slabs just to cover up the water from turning into ice. I have a lot of cobblestone already so I’ll just make a stack of slabs.
I need at least two water buckets so I can make an infinite water source, and so I can use that to extend the spring of water.
I’m gonna need all the potatoes in my inventory. I think I had at least 10. I don’t remember how much… Ok, since I didn’t want the end result to get messed up, I thought about checking how many raw potatoes I got and I have 14.
I’m gonna need an axe so I can chop down any trees in the way. I’m also gonna need a shovel and a hoe.
Plan for sub-goal 2: That sub-goal is going to be extending the farm after planting the potatoes.
I’m going to place all the dirt I have left and either extend the grid down the one water source line or create separate water sources for more rows. I have to make space beforehand tho. There’s trees in the way so Im going to cut them.
I’ll mine for a stack of coal while waiting for the potatoes to grow
I think this plan is almost the same as plan 1 so Im gonna leave it at that. I think I want to have 64 to 128 spaces to grow potatoes depending on how many I want to do. The more spaces the faster I’ll get my stockpile.
Plan for sub-goal 3:
For sub-goal 3 I have to stockpile on food so that means I have to have coal to bake the potatoes. I’ll just start baking extra potatoes in the furnace.
Context: (optional – fill out or delete the context section)
I got 14 potatoes to start a farm. I got a lot of resources to do it already. Also, I have bones for bone meal so that might speed up steps in the project
